DIY Galvanized Pipe Kitchen Shelves are what the doctor ordered to achieve style and function in your home. I’m obsessed with the rustic industrial style because I’m attracted to the juxtaposition between metal and wood. It’s easier to make custom made shelving than you think. Continue reading to see how we achieved this look!
You guys, I’m SO excited to share this post this week. Kieran and I made DIY Galvanized Pipe Kitchen Shelves over the weekend and I love how they turned out!! They give our kitchen a much-needed and desired rustic/homie vibe.
Kieran and I have been renovating our kitchen and it’s taking a looooong ass time. Mostly because we’re tackling much of the reno on our own or with friends. We’ve had our very own demo day, our friend Danyel helped with a design scheme, and we knocked out a whopper of a project, the kitchen/dining room floor transition.
The new floors heavily dented our savings account so we chilled out on DIY projects for a minute. Our tax return yielded some play money which of course we blew at the hardware store. Some girls like to spend money on clothes, makeup, and shoes but I geek out over nails, wood, paint, and beer… always beer.
Kieran and I jumped back into the DIY swing of things and knocked out shelving our kitchen desperately needed. As a refresher, here is the original design Danyel came up with:
Here are the DIY Galvanized Kitchen Shelves that we made 🙂
We modified the design to account for wall outlets and our overall aesthetic but nailed the principle symmetry. I struggled to design this space because of the large soffit hanging from the ceiling (pictured below). The soffit hides a bunch of wires and other house-ly crap so it’s easier for us to keep it than remove it. Danyel’s design artistically balances the wall space giving us style and much-needed storage. In other words, she nailed it!
Here’s our YouTube video explaining how we built our DIY Galvanized Pipe Kitchen Shelves:
Danyel provided the foundation for design but left planning what materials to use to us. We built a DIY Galvanized Mudroom in our dining room back in January of this year. From a design standpoint, I felt using the same materials to build our kitchen shelves would help tie the two rooms together. My house is painted in cool blue and grey tones so the walnut stain would give our kitchen some warmth.
Kieran gave in-depth directions on how we made the mudroom. Since we duplicated the same materials and piping for the DIY Galvanized Pipe Kitchen Shelves, I left the instruction element out of this post. However, our YouTube video shows additional build information which I encourage you to watch.
Here is the material list for this project:
-Lumber:
White Pine Common Board
1″x6″ – 8ft 1 board
1″x6″ – 6ft 2 boards
1″x2″ – 8ft 1 board
1″x2″ – 6ft 2 boards
– Pipes:
All Black 1/2″ size
8″ Pipe 6 pcs
6″ Pipe 2 pcs
2″ Pipe 2 pcs
Floor flange 4 pcs
1/2″ Coupling 14 pcs
1/2″x close Connector 6pcs
1/2″x1/2″ 90‑Degree Street Elbow 2 pcs
– Screws:
#9 3″ general purpose screws (18 used to anchor ledger board to the wall)
#7 2″ general purpose screws (about 18 used to attach the shelf to ledger board)
#7 2″ general purpose screws (16 used to attach floor flanges to wall & soffit)
– Wood finish:
Pre-stain
Dark Walnut
Polyurethane
I can’t begin to express how excited I am for our upcoming DIY projects. Kieran invested in a compound miter saw which will come in handy on almost every future build.
Here is a list of the projects we have coming down the pipeline:
- Building a similar galvanized pipe spice rack for the kitchen.
- Turning an entryway to our kitchen into a shallow pantry.
- Building a faux barn door (with barn door hardware) for the pantry.
- Finding a creative way to resurface our fireplace.
- Building out a walk-in closest in our bedroom.
- Build a coffee table.
- Build a wine rack and bar cart with both wooden and industrial elements.
This list isn’t in order as I’m not sure which we’ll complete next, but I look forward to future builds.
The reason I’m excited about these builds is that each project we complete going forward will make our house look and feel like a home. We threw all of our energy at the pain in the ass projects like taking down walls and painting, over the last couple of years, so it feels wonderful to be at this stage. The stage where we fill our walls and give our home some much-needed coziness.
I’m head over heels for our new DIY Galvanized Pipe Kitchen Shelving. They add style, functionality, and a rustic warmth to my deep blue kitchen walls. I won’t lie, one of my favorite parts of this project was shopping for cute planters and glass containers. I had fun, way too much fun.
If you’ve always wanted to make these types of shelves and have questions, leave a comment below! There are several ways to achieve this look so we’re always happy to discuss our thought process on design, materials, the actual build, ect. Note, Kieran and I consider ourselves beginner DIY’ers so comment if you know an easier technique other than the one(s) we use! We always appreciate the help and input, especially if you see we royally messed something up!
Alright, folks, that’s a wrap on my DIY Galvanized Pipe Kitchen Shelving post! Thank you so much for stopping by! I’m not 100% sure what we’re up to next week but I have a feeling it may be sushi or poke bowl related. Kieran and I have been invited to an Asian food theme potluck so I have spicy tuna rolls on the brain. The best part is when I make the ideas inside my brain and put them in my mouth. Mmmm, spicy tuna rolls sound baller right now!
Thank you for being apart of the Shock Munch community, I appreciate you!
Sincerely,
Christina

That shelving looks fantastic Christina! And I love the rustic feel. You definitely utilized the space well. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your DIY projects. From your list, it looks like you guys are going to be busy! Happy weekend!
Thanks!! I can’t WAIT to build the shallow pantry and our bedroom’s walk-in closet. Holy moly I’ll finally have some storage up in hurr!
Your kitchen is styling! I love the dark blue color of the wall as back drop to the pipes and dark stain wood shelves. So cool how you use piping to create custom shelving around your home. If Chris and I tried to do this our stuff will probably be falling off the shelves soon after completion. We should stick to home brewing, that’s as much DIY as we can handle! Pinning this project for inspiration, maybe when my son grows a little more he can start doing things around the house for us, he seems to have skills we don’t, lol.
Thanks! I love metal/wood look! We’re always a little fearful of our creations meeting their demise in a “falling off the wall” accident, but the ledger boards are screwed into the studs which makes the shelves solid AF! Watch, bc I said that the shelves will fall. HA!
Dude, I’m super jealous you brew your own beer. I tried once and failed. My beer tasted like dirty feet. 😀
This is such a creative idea and it turned out beautifully! We are Fixer Upper addicts — it’s so fun to get new ideas. This could totally be on the show! 🙂
Oh my gosh, Fixer Upper is the BEST! Thank you so freaking much!!!
OK WHAT? You made those shelves? This was a DIY thing? You should see how horribly my DIY projects turn out. No way would I ever trust myself to build something that’s sturdy enough to store things on :). You’re very impressive! The shelves look fantastic!
Hahaha, well… Kieran made those shelves. I stained them but Kieran gets the credit for the build. Thank you so much 🙂
Dude! These galvanized pipe shelves turned out SO well. I’m kinda obsessed with the rustic, country look too…but it totally wouldn’t work in our house unless we strip it all the way back and start over. So for the meantime, I’ll just live vicariously through you and Kieran! Love the look! I’ve always wanted those slider doors (barn doors) and exposed brick and exposed wooden beams. That’s my wish list! Also, “other house-ly crap” made me laugh my arse off…and almost spit coffee out onto my keyboard. Also, speaking of coffee, I think coffee table and wine bar need to be WAY higher on your priority list. 🙂
THANK YOU!!!! Hahahahaha, so happy I made you laugh. And dude, I love how you call’em like you see’em. The bar should have been first on the list 😀
OMG, these came out fantastic! I love the galvanized pipe look. It just makes a kitchen feel so lived-in and warm. Plus, it looks FAB against your dark blue walls!
Awwww shucks! Thank you so much 🙂
I’ve been dying to make shelves, but the galvanized shelves are a little too industrial for my bedroom. Maybe I’ll try these in my kitchen, since they look rocking in yours. The metal and wood looks great together. I love spending money at the hardware store too. The floors look awesome. Loving the video 🙂
Thank you! I LOVE the metal/wood combo! It’s my favorite 🙂
OMG, we spend WAY too much money at the hardware store but walking around those aisles make me happy.
Again, thank you SO much 🙂
ahhh these are gorgeous!! and they look so sturdy (half the time i see shelves, and am weary to put anything on them lol). and yay for tax return fun money (i’m spending allll of mine on roadtrips and travel haha).
Road trips and travel are the coolest ways to spend a tax refund! I’m so fun jealous of your trips 🙂
You must be so proud every time you see your shelves!! They are awesome and how cool you have a friend that knows CAD 😉 .
Right? We really lucked out to have a friend help us design our kitchen! Thank you!!
What a great look! I love how they turned out and they totally look doable!
Thank you so much!!
