Remember in my recent post I was going on and on about only eating eggs for breakfast? I was like, I only eat eggs for breakfast, blah, blah, blah.
Whelp, every now and again your girl needs some Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls all up in her face. Cinnabon cinnamon rolls were all the rage when I was growing up. Anytime I went to the mall with my friends, we usually found time to stop off at Cinnabon. I vividly remember their cinnamon rolls being extra soft and over the top ooey gooey. I’ll admit, I was a fan.
As an adult, I’ve eaten my fair share of cinnamon rolls which have been amazing, but dry, waaaay to dry for my taste. I like my cinnamon rolls to be sticky and oozing with cinnamon-y sugar goodness. Whelp folks, introducing Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls. Note, like I said before, I’m not much of a baker. Amanda, my sister-in-law turned me on to this recipe. It’s an adaptation of allrecipes.com. The ingredients are basically the same, but the technique she told me to use is a bit different. I feel like her technique renders a mouth-watering soft cinnamon roll dripping with a sugary sweetness that’s hard to resist.
Quick tangent before I talk about the Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls. OMG, I’m f’ing tired you guys. Kieran had one of his “dreams” last night and woke me up in the middle of the night. Allow me to explain what one of his “dreams” means…
Kieran’s dreams are so vivid, he often acts them out in reality. Unfortunately, I’m normally on the receiving end of that reality. For example, I was startled awake one night because he began beating the crap out of the bed. He dreamt the bed was full of bees and he needed to squash them. He ran up and down the length of the bed hitting and kicking it along the way.
Another night he dreamt he was late for the bus. As he approached the bus stop, the bus began to drive off. Kieran slapped the side of the bus screaming, Hey, stop! You can probably see where I’m going with this. He wasn’t slapping the side of the bus, he was slapping me and screaming hey, stop in my face!
One night Kieran got a taste of his own late night shenanigans, finally! He dreamt he was behind a humongous dog who was wagging its tail. Kieran would have been flattened to the ground if he didn’t move. This dog was like Clifford the Big Red Dog. Kieran screamed Here we go and commando rolled out of way, just in time. In reality, he screamed here we go and commando rolled himself out of bed and on to the floor.
Did you just commando roll yourself out of bed, I asked?
Sheepishly Kieran responded, Yeah.
Are you hurt? I asked, stifling a laugh.
Kinda… he responded meekly.
Once Kieran came to and realized what happened, we both began laughing hysterically.
Whelp, last night Kieran had another one of his dreams. He doesn’t remember what he was dreaming about but it must have been about our dog, Homie. Kieran shot up, squeezed my leg, and shouted, No Homie, no! He was grabbing Homie in his dream to keep her close when in reality he was grabbing my leg.
Kieran’s special dreams are rare, they don’t happen all the time. Most nights, after we realize he’s dreaming, we both begin to laugh because, when you think about it, it’s pretty funny. And let’s be real, I’ve woken him up in the middle of the night too. Every so often I talk in my sleep, loudly. One night I laughed really loud then bellowed, He likes to laugh, I like to laugh. We can laugh and talk and do all the things! After that, I fell back to sleep and he didn’t hear a peep out of me for the remainder of the night. We had a good laugh about it in the morning… and we liked it 🙂
After things settled down last night and Kieran fell back asleep, our cat Myron Fuzzypants decided it was a good time to sleep on my face. Between Kieran’s late night shenanigans and Myron purring on my head, I didn’t get much sleep.
Thankfully, I had a big plate of Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls waiting for me when I woke up. They were just what the doctored ordered after a long night.
Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls are the epitome of an indulgent breakfast. The rolls are tender, the sugar-cinnamon filling is hot and sticky, and the icing is melt in your mouth delicious. You will feel like you’ve died and gone to sugar heaven after every bite.
I mentioned before this recipe comes from allrecipes.com but I used Amanda’s suggested cooking techniques. For starters, I don’t own a bread maker. Those were all the rage when I was growing up but I never owned one myself. I used my standing mixer to get the job done. Another directional step that I altered is flipping the rolls upside down, in their pan, after they bake. The cinnamon-sugar mixture sinks to the bottom of the pan while they bake because of gravity. Once the rolls come out of the oven, flip the pan upside down and leave it alone for 5-10 minutes. The cinnamon-sugar seeps back down recoating the rolls so they are extra sticky and scrumptious!
To get super soft rolls be sure to cover the rolls in tinfoil before they bake. The foil traps the heat and steams the rolls, making them super soft and tender. Try not to overbake the rolls otherwise, they will be tougher. When in doubt, yank the rolls from the oven early and test one out. You can also pop them back in the oven if necessary.
Here is a great time-saving tip, you can make the cinnamon rolls the day or night before! Make the dough and form the 12 rolls a day ahead of time. Place them in a greased 9×13-inch pan, cover the pan, and store them in the fridge. The next morning, let them rest on the counter for 20 minutes then simply pop them in the oven! Wham, bam, thank you, cinnamon-sugary ma’am!
Real talk though, these cinnamon rolls are really f’ing good. Amanda made these rolls for Christmas last year and everyone, including me, fawned over them. I knew I had to share the recipe with you!
Alright, gang, that’s a wrap on Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Rolls. If you have the time makes your cinnamon rolls from scratch this year. Your family will be amazed and treat you like the domestic goddess you are!
