Copycat Americone Dream Ice Cream is a creamy, caramel-y, chocolatey, chunky indulgence that will whip your taste buds into a feeding frenzy!
Copycat Americone Dream is my and Kieran’s favorite ice cream of all time. Americone Dream by Ben & Jerry’s is vanilla caramel swirl ice cream with chocolate dipped waffle cone chunks. This recipe has my treasured dessert flavors all in one: vanilla, caramel, and chocolate.
You’ll notice desserts are not the focus of my blog for the following reasons:
- My husband doesn’t have a sweet tooth, so I focus on things we both eat.
- I devour so much dessert ingredients/batter, there isn’t anything left to make! Seriously, I have a problem.
Copycat Americone Dream Ice Cream is the one dessert Kieran really enjoys. So, I decided to surprise him by making this recipe. I was determined to bring my A game and leave the ice cream ingredients alone. No way I was going to fail, not this time.
But you have to believe me, it wasn’t my fault! I swear my ice cream maker had it out for me! Here’s what happened.
I poured the ice cream ingredients into the ice cream maker, set the timer for 20 minutes, and walked away. The timer went off and I came back to the ice cream maker overflowing with ice cream. I’ve made this recipe countless times and that has never happened before!
Have you seen the Brady Bunch episode where the kids put too much laundry detergent in the washing machine? When they come back to finish the laundry, they are up to their eyeballs in suds. Imagine that but with delicious ice cream. It was a mess. I had no choice but to frantically lick up the ice cream spreading all over my counter! I mean seriously, what would you have done? Cleaned it up with a paper towel? Are you nuts?!
I face planted into that tasty puddle of ice cream chanting nom nom nom. I’m grateful my husband doesn’t witness these finer moments of my life.
Did I learn anything from this mishap? I learned when your ice cream maker goes explode-o on you, you have no choice but to lick up the delicious, delicious mess. Thank you ice cream maker, you know how much I love ice cream, so I’m positive you exploded because you love me. You are a true, true friend.
See? How was any of this my fault?
There are 3 flavor components to this ice cream. Americone Dream features vanilla ice cream, caramel, and chocolate dipped waffle cone chunks. Now, I’ve seen a ton of ice cream recipes that call for 6 egg yolks to make the ice cream into more of a custard. I figured with the caramel and chocolate dipped waffle cone chunks, a lighter, less rich vanilla ice cream base would be better.
If you prefer your vanilla ice cream made with eggs, by all means, add them! Serious Eats wrote an article explaining the benefits of adding egg yolks to ice cream.
Egg yolks help improve the stability of ice cream, reducing its tendency to melt before you can get it from the freezer to your mouth. Egg yolks also prolong ice cream’s shelf life in a freezer since they hinder the thaw-re-freeze cycle that ruins ice cream’s creamy texture.
Our Copycat Americone Dream Ice Cream doesn’t last more than a few days in our house, so we don’t have any issues mentioned above. Even though my recipe melts faster, we enjoy the cleaner vanilla taste in this ice cream.
This recipe takes awhile to make but the caramel sauce and chocolate covered waffle cones can be made a couple days in advance. Plus, the end result is worth it.
If you love vanilla, caramel, and chocolate ice cream, this is the recipe for you!
