Coconut Rum White Pirate Cocktails are a delicious twist on the classic White Russian drink.
Ahoy Matey, prepare your taste buds for a rich and creamy trip to the Carribean! Coconut Rum White Pirate Cocktails is a fun twist on the White Russian Classic. Although the drinks look identical, it doesn’t feel right to call this drink Coconut Rum White Russians since it doesn’t contain any vodka. I named this drink White Pirate because I used coconut rum instead. To kick the indulgence up a notch, I made the drink with coconut milk instead of heavy cream. The taste is slightly sweeter without a coconut-y overkill. The cocktail maintains the same richness and silky mouthfeel as a White Russian while transporting your palate to the tropics.
Speaking of the tropics, it’s still insanely hot in Portland. I’m currently sitting in the basement, in the dark, with fans blowing on me from all directions. The dark room and the wind from the fans make it feel like I’m out to sea. If I have to imagine being out to sea to cool down, I might as well be drinking rum damn it.
My photography captures the mood I’m in. It’s dark and moody rather than light and festive. I’ll be honest, the heat is making me all kinds of grouchy. I’m sitting here in the dark, sipping my White Pirate, surrounded by box fans. If I close my eyes I imagine standing on the bow of a boat. A storm’s a-brewin. The fierce winds whip my hair around my face as the waves toss my ship back and forth. Suddenly, I’m Captain Christina of the merchant vessel Black Kahlua. It’s my job to transport a billion gallons of White Pirates to
my mate’s you.
Sail ho, I scream at my men, there’s another ship on the horizon!
Blimey, Kieran, my first mate shouts back, it’s the dreaded pirate Boozy Black Beard! He’s going to steal our rum!
Curses, he’s coming about! Our only hope is to drink all the rum!
My crew scurried about the deck guzzling all the rum on board.
Heave, ho! Heave, ho! Down the hatch, the White Pirates go!
Despite the odds, the inebriated crew escaped from Boozy Black Beard’s clutches! Immediately afterward they washed the ship onshore and marooned themselves on the island of Sober Despair. The moral of this tale? Drink responsibly and Captain Christina is delirious from the heat and needs to find air conditioning, stat.
Luckily for me, I have Coconut Rum White Pirate Cocktails to cool me down! This beverage is comforting AF. And believe me, we need all the comfort we can get to combat this heat.
When I tested the recipe I assumed the coconut rum and coconut milk would be coconut overkill, but it wasn’t. I really enjoyed the taste! The drink was sweet, but not too sweet. For fun, I also tested the recipe with heavy cream and vanilla almond milk. Surprisingly, I loved them equally! My favorite combination was the coconut rum and coconut milk, but you can totally get away with heavy cream or vanilla almond milk. Vanilla almond milk is nice if you wish to cut some calories from this recipe.
Note, if you use almond milk, it won’t float on top of the Kahlua like heavy cream and coconut milk does. The almond milk will mix with the Kahlua and turn the liquid beige right away. In spite of this, the drink still tastes amazing!
All in all, I found the White Pirates to be sweet, creamy, and comforting. As a matter of fact, I found White Pirates to taste better than their Russian counterpart.
I’m going to sit in my basement and enjoy my frosty beverage. Whether you have air conditioning or not, I hope you enjoy the Coconut Rum White Pirate Cocktails too!
